LDS Church records indicate John was born and died at 'Sawmill, Yavapai, Arizona.' John's father must have worked at a sawmill which was located for a time at Skutumpah, Utah for the LDS Church. Skutumpah is very near Upper Kanab where John is buried. This sawmill was moved about 40 miles south to the Buckskin Mountain (Kaibab) in northern Arizona. At the time of John's birth and death, the Buckskin Mountain was located in Yavapai County, Arizona Territory. In 1892, Coconino County was formed out of Yavapai.

Martha Adeline Hamblin Crosby, daughter of Jacob Hamblin, also died at a sawmill camp on the Buckskin Mountain. This was three years earlier in 1877. She was brought to Kanab for burial. John may have died at this same camp, then taken to Upper Kanab for burial.
