KILLS WIFE AND BABE,THEN SUICIDES--JOHN A.ROE,of Humboldt,shot and instantly
killed his wife,GAZELLE ROE,and mortally wounded his baby daughter,DORIS GAZELLE
ROE,at a residence in Memphis Monday morning about 9 o'clock, and then placing the
point of his pistol to his temple, blew out his own brains. The baby was carried to
a hospital where she died four hours after the shooting.Young ROE's wife left him
about three months ago, going to the home of one of her sisters,Mrs.HARRISON,in
Memphis.ROE went to Memphis it is said,ti try and induce the wife to return home
with him.Mrs.ROE evidently promised to return with him,as a partially packed
suitcase gave mute evidence. The promise was probably given through fear,as Mrs.ROE
soon slipped out and started to gain protection, carrying her baby with her.Just as
she had gotten in front of the home of J.M.LAMMEY at 212 Cedar St.,Chelsa,ROE
began to overtake her.Greatly fearing him,Mrs.ROE ran into the LAMMEY home, crying
out to hide her.ROE ran in after her, overtaking her in the dining room he shot
her,the ball taking effect in her head. She fell to the floor mortally wounded or
dead. The infant fell under her and it's temple was crushed.ROE then stood over her
body and fired another shot or two into her body. One of the shots passed entirely
through the body of the woman and then through the baby.

Capt.LEE ordered ROE to raise his hands which he did, placing the gun to his head
and fired. The bodies were taken in charge by Collins-Sturla Funeral Home and
prepared for burial. All three were brought to Humboldt Monday night, accompanied by
Mr.J.W.ROE,father of John W.ROE and City Marshal SENTER,who had gone to Memphis on
the first train following the tragedy. The bodies were taken to the former home of
the dead from which place funeral services were held, burial in Rose Hill
Cemetery.John A.ROE was reared in Humboldt and was one of a family of several
children. He was married to Gazelle GULLETTE about three years, and one child, the
one killed,blessed the union.
