Born in Selm, a town in the district of Unna, in North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen), Germany; on the 1860 and 1880 Census, birthplace listed as Germany, Preußen and Germany, Prussia, respectively. Prussia is the English translation of Preußen. Prussia, which no longer exists, was part of Germany at the time, as part of the former German Empire. However, part of Prussia became Poland after World War I and the other part became Poland after World War II. The town, Selm, though, was in Germany both before and after World Wars. To the Census takers, she probably alluded to Prussian ancestry. My Great Grandparents were German-speaking Prussians, who likewise confused Census-takers as to country of origin. Some sources indicate that her maiden name had an umlaut over the letter "u" in her maiden name, i.e., LÜCKE; having studied German in college, I stand by this, but must admit that modern search results would be few.
