Samuel Alexander Newton, son of Ebenezer James Newton and Sarah (Sallie) (Halliburton) Newton, was born March 10, 1867 in Panola County, Texas. He married Henrietta (Hettie)Reece December 26, 1894. After Sam's mother died in 1886, Sam, along with his sister Ona Lulu and Anna Parilee helped take care of their youngest brother John Erwin Newton. The Sam Newton family moved from East Texas and was counted in the 1900 census in Lampasas County, Texas and living with the family was Sam's youngest brother John Erwin. After John Erwin Newton married Lula Cleveland Lee, these two families were forever entwined, moving together and buying land together. Samuel being 12 years older than his brother was a father figure for John Erwin. The two families moved to Clayton, New Mexico in 1912 and stayed a few months before traveling by covered wagon from Clayton to Springer, NM. They rented a place for their families and found work and went out on the weekends to work their land claims east of Springer. Finally they moved to their own land, established a Newton School and the community of farms in the area was known as the Newton Community. They both raised their families in New Mexico, where most of the children continued to live. However around 1929/1930 Samuel and Hettie moved back to East Texas, remaining there until Sam died September 19, 1936 in Dallas, Texas and is buried in Longview, Texas. The two brothers only saw each other one more time before Sam's death.
