Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Cathedral of St. Mary for the Rev. Paul J. Schmelzer, 86, who died Tuesday at St. Cloud Hospital.
Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Anoka.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at St. Mary's Cathedral Lower Crypt and from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday in the upper church. Vigil prayers will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. Mary's Cathedral Lower Crypt.

Arrangements were made by Williams Funeral Home, St. Cloud.

The Rev. Paul Schmelzer was born in Little Falls to Paul and Gertrude (Wardarski) Schmelzer. He attended Crosier Junior College, Onamia, and then graduated from St. John's University and from St. John's Seminary. He was ordained in 1943 and was an assistant at St. Mary's Cathedral from 1943 to 1946, and at St. Joseph's in Pierz from 1946 to 1948. He was the administrator at Sts. Peter and Paul in Elrosa in 1948, and was the pastor at St. Michael's in Motley from 1948 to 1961. While in Motley, he was a Morrison County Deputy Sheriff and also helped found the Motley Telephone Co., where he was an installer. He then became the pastor of St. Nicholas in Belle River from 1961 to 1964. From 1964 to 1974 he was at Our Lady of the Angels, Sauk Centre. He then moved to St. Nicholas and was the pastor of the St. Nicholas parish from 1974 to 1988, when he retired from his pastoral duties. He was a member of Tribunal of the Diocese of St. Cloud since 1959, and was a judge since 1975. He was Director of Rural Life from 1955 to 1957.

Survivors include his brothers and sisters, Dorothy Deshayes, Loren and Richard of Anoka, Delmar of Andover, Delores Marott and Leona Trost of Coon Rapids.

He also leaves behind long-time caretaker, Leona Lentsch of St. Cloud.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald.
