Son of John Bennett and Ann Edgar, his baptism record says he was born November 30th, 1835 and baptised on December 6th, 1835 in Kirkmichael Parish, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Immigrated to America with his father John, brother John, and sisters Elizabeth and Henrietta on the ship Shenandoah, arriving in Philadelphia on July 12, 1851.

Came to Richland County around 1857, and married Mercy Ann Moore on December 10th, 1863. They had a 110 acre farm a few miles east of Gotham.
