CANTON HERALD, February 27, 1931
"Mrs. Mary E. Carr, aged 64 years, died suddenly Friday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ruby Hutchinson, in Dallas, her death resulting from a stroke of apoplexy sustained in the garden while she was picking turnip greens for the family dinner. Funeral services were held Saturday, interment taking place in the cemetery in the Roddy community where she spent much of her life. Mrs. Carr had been married three times and was a widow at the time of her death. Her first husband was Will Morrison, father of the former tax collector Herbert Morrison, and her second husband was Henderson Murphy, both well known citizens of this county during their lifetimes. She is survived by six sons, Herbert Morrison of Denton, Arthur Murphy of Mabank, John Murphy, Henry Murphy and Jack Murphy of Dallas; and Ralph Murphy of Avarado; three daughters, Mrs. V.G. White of Lockney, Mrs. Jack Norris and Mrs. Ruby Hutchinson of Dallas.
Notice that Mary Ellen's death date is incorrect on her headstone. According to her obituary above, she actually passed away on 20 Feb 1931. Her obituary doesn't mention her third husband, Byrum Carr. The 1930 census has Mary and her youngest child, Ruby Murphrey living with him. Ruby is listed as "step-daughter." All of her grandchildrem called Mary "Grandma Carr."
