W. Gansel Bennett, 88, of Decatur, formerly of Windsor, died 9:45 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 26, 1998) in his home. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Monday in Ash Grove Cemetery, near Windsor with Gretchen Barron, minister of Central Chrisitian Church, officiating. Therewill be no visitation. Relatives and friends may gather at Lovins Lockart Funeral Home, Windsor, at 2:45 p.m. Monday for the funer al procession to the cemetery.
Memorials: Central Christian Church, Marie Ridgley Bennett Scholarship Fund at Millikin University or Decatur Memorial Hospital Hospice Program. Mr. Bennett was born near Windsor on Feb. 15, 1910, the son of Burl and Fay Lovins Bennett. He earned BA and MA degrees at the University of Illinois, a MA degree from Columbia University, New York.
Mr. Bennett was a member of Central Christian Church where he was a former board member and Deacon Emeritus. He was a life member of Phi Delta Kappa, a member of DEA and NEA and the National Guidance Association. In 1953 he was granted a Ford Fellowship to travel for one year to visit colleges and universities and businesses in the midwest and eastern United States to assist students in making their future plans. He married Marie Ridgley on July 25, 1943. Surviving are his wife; brothers, Toby and wife Hazel, Paul and wife Maxine, all of Windsor; nephews, Tim, Preston and Greg, all of Windsor; niece, Alice Fay Hobbs of Houston, Texas; several grandnieces and grandnephews and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.
