Whitney: Well Known Poultry Judge

ATHOL -- O. Fayne Whitney, 96, of 359 Twichell St., died, Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, at the Leo P. Lachance Center in Gardner.

He was born in Athol, on Dec. 8, 1910, the son of Oakley and Mildred V. (Bancroft) Whitney. He grew up in Orange, graduating from Orange High School in 1929 and from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture (now University of Massachusetts - Amherst) in 1931. In 1933 he married Ruth White and moved to Athol. He worked at the L.S. Starrett Company for 38 years, retiring as foreman of the polishing room.

Fayne was a member of the Athol Congregational Church for over 50 years, working on many church fairs, was a member of the Star-Athol Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. for over 50 years, and a member of the Athol Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. He enjoyed breeding, showing and judging poultry for over 75 years. He was a Master Exhibitor and Master Breeder in the American Poultry Association as well as the American Bantam Association and in 1995 Fayne was honored in Richmond, VA as a life member of the American Poultry Association. He was a licensed Bantam judge and judged all over New England at fairs and winter shows and his strain of Light Brahama Bantams is famous all over the world. Fayne truly enjoyed meeting and visiting with people wherever he went, establishing many life-long friendships.

His wife of 70 years, Ruth L. (White) Whitney, died in 2004. He leaves a son, Mark F. Whitney of Dillon, CO; a grandson, Mark A. Whitney of Charlotte, NC; a granddaughter, Tracy Franks of Bozeman, MT; two great grandsons, Josh and Hayes Whitney of Charlotte, NC; three nieces, Diane Frost of Athol, Justine Chandler of Summer Dale, AL, and Candace Pratt of Squim, WA; a sister-in-law, Jean Whitney of Newport Beach, CA; along with many other nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Waite, and a brother, Robert Whitney.

A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 11 a.m. at the Higgins-O'Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main St., with the Rev. Chester Ham of Londonderry, NH and the Rev. Harold V. Lloyd, Jr., pastor of the Athol Congregational Church, officiating.

Members of Star-Athol Lodge of Masons will conduct a service following the memorial.
