Mildred Ellen Koons, 76, of Columbus, Indiana, peacefully passed away at her home on Easter Sunday, April 24, 2011, at 6:09 a.m.

Mildred was born and raised in an agricultural family of six in Nabb, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Charles M. and Lola E. Bastian, and her brother, Charles L. Bastian.

As a young adult, she received many awards in Girls 4-H for her preparation of baked goods and raising livestock, for which she was awarded trips to the Indiana State Fair. Upon graduation from high school, Mildred attended Purdue University where she met Oakley A. Koons, whom she later married at Naab Presbyterian Church on April 30, 1955.

She was blessed with the opportunity to travel around the United States and France as a result of military relocations. At the conclusion of her husband's service in the Air Force, the family moved to Columbus, Indiana. Mildred, a devoted wife and mother, worked for several years as a teacher's aide in the Bartholomew County Consolidated School System, then as Vice President of Oak's Lawn Care.

She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Columbus and sang in the choir.

She leaves behind her husband, Oak A. Koons, and children, Cathie and Michael Wolski; Charlie and Kim Koons; Tim and Sharon Koons; Jerry Koons, one sister, Ruth Ann Skaggs, one brother, Roy Bastian, plus sister-in-law, Roberta Bastian. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Robert H. Craig officiating. Family and friends may call today from 4 to 8 p.m. at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street and from 5:30 p.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. The committal service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Garland Brook Cemetery.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of South Central Indiana or First Presbyterian Church.
