HIGH POINT – Mr. John William ‘Jay' Wood, 81 of Old Mill Rd. in High Point, died on Friday, May 20, 2011 at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro.

Jay was born in High Point in 1929 to E.A. "Eck" and Thursie Shore Wood. He attended High Point and Jamestown schools. In 1948, he enlisted in the US Navy and for the next seven years traveled to many foreign countries with duty on three different ships; approximately two years served during the Korean War.

After he was honorably discharged in 1955, Jay worked locally in the automobile business in sales and management for 15 years.

1n 1970, Jay acquired his brokers license in the real estate industry. During the past 34 years he has owned his own company and been involved in several partnerships in the High Point and Jamestown areas.

Jay has served on practically every committee within the structure of the High Point Area Board of Realtors. In 1976, he was the recipient of the ‘Realtor of the Year Award'. Jay was responsible for forming the Multiple Listing Service in 1977 for the High Point Board of Realtors. He was also the first Multiple Listing Service President.

In 1981, Jay became Vice President of the High Point Board of Realtors. In 1982, he served as President of the High Point Board of Realtors. In 1989, he was presented with the ‘Builder of the Year Award' for the High Point Area Builders Association and elected President of the Association in 1990. He graduated from the Realtors Institute in 1972 and received the ‘Top Producer Award' within the High Point Realtors Association in 1990.

Civic activities included 19 years with High Point Jaycees (4 years as Director). He was a Charter Member and Past President of the Jamestown Jaycees. Jay was Charter Member of American Business Clubs and Past President of the Piedmont Chapter. From 1980-1990, he served on the long-range Planning Committee at John Wesley College. He has been a member of First Wesleyan Church since 1965. In 1970, he became a Charter Member of the Board of Trustees of Wesleyan Arms Nursing and Retirement Center, where he has served every year to the present. He takes much satisfaction in the welfare of the elderly and disabled residents of Westchester Manor Skilled Nursing and Retirement facilities.

Over the years, Jay has participated in training numerous realtors of which many are presently very successful top agents now serving out city. As part of the Management Team at Stan Byrd Realtors, his primary duty is administering a continuous training program for the company. Jay takes great pleasure in sharing his knowledge and experience from the past 34 years and observes the team as they become professional and successful agents.

On May 15, 1981 he married the former Sharon Keefer and they renewed their vows on May 15, 2011. She survives of the residence. Also surviving are two children: Donna Wood McNulty and Tab A. Wood, and wife Candy, one step-son: Jason Horton, one sister: Ruth Morgan and two grandchildren: Blair and Andi Wood of Florida, one nephew: J.C. Morgan and one niece: Barbara Brown. He was preceded in death by a brother: Bobby Wood.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, May 23rd at First Wesleyan Church in High Point with Reverend Dr. David Keith and Reverend Roland Cavanaugh officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:30 until 1:45 pm at the Church.
