MISS GEORGIA KERN DEAD.
Miss Georgia Kern died at the residence of Rev. and Mrs. W. S. Hooper, Monday, January 27, after a lingering illness with typhoid fever. The deceased is the youngest daughter of Farnk Kern, and came down from Chicago with the family to spend the holidays with their many friends. Shortly after Christmas she was stricken with fever and during the weeks that followed lay very low. All that loving hears(sic) and hands, or medical skill could do proved of no avail and at 12:30 last Monday, surrounded by the nearest and dearest of all on earth her spirit took flight.
Her death was a sad blow to the large circle of friends who had been so woeful and solicitous during her illness. Being naturally of bright and happy disposition she cast sunshine wherever she she went and having lived her short life in this city counted her friends by the score.
All Tuesday afternoon little throngs were to be seen coming and going from the Hooper home whither they went to take a last view of their friends as she reposed in the dainty white casket surrounded by a most beautiful array of floral offerings.
The funeral services were held in the M.E. church Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock and were conducted by Dr. T. J. Wheat assisted by Dr. S. M. Morton of the Presbyterian church, and Dr. F. L. Kenyon of the Congregational church. The hymns “There is a Reaper Whose Name is Death,” “Nearer My God to Thee” and “Jerusalem the Golden” were very beautifully rendered by Mrs. L M McNair, Mrs. Stubbins, Ed. McFadden and Earnest Moores. Commercial - (Mattoon Gazette - Fri., Jan. 31, 1896)
