William Daniel "Dan" Irons, 83, of Mattoon, passed from this life at 4:55 p.m. on Tuesday, August 2, 2005, at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
Funeral services in tribute to his life will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, August 5th, at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. John P. Besore III officiating. Burial will follow in the Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00-8:00 p.m. this (Thursday) evening at the funeral home.
Dan was born December 16, 1921, in Mattoon, a son of John Robert "Bob" and Violet (Cisna) Irons. He married Rena Lee Holbrook on January 27, 1943.
Survivors include his wife, Rena Irons of Mattoon; his son, David R. Irons and wife Jan of Neoga; his loving "daughter", Cathy Bunyard and husband Ed of Mattoon; his sister, Lila Lee Ghere and husband Harry of Arcola; two grandsons, Andy J. Irons of Charleston and J. D. Irons of Mattoon; and two great-granddaughters, Courtney Irons and Chelsea Irons.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Brad Irons; and one grandson, Chip Irons.
Mr. Irons was the former co-owner and operator of the Mattoon Flower Shop in Mattoon for sixty years. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II in the South Pacific and the East Coast. Dan was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He also had earned the honor of 32nd Degree Mason and was formerly active in the Shriners, the V.F.W. Post 4325 and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 803. He had served as Executive Secretary and member of the Illinois State Florists Association and also held the office of Director and Treasurer in the F.T.D. worldwide floral organization. Dan and his wife, Rena, were members of the Charleston Country Club and supported numerous community activities throughout their years in Mattoon
