MATTOON - Robert Merrill Bauer, 85, of Mattoon, passed away at 7:55 p.m. on Monday, December 29, 2008, at Mattoon Health Care Center. Funeral services honoring his life will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 3rd, 2009, at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Eugene Black officiating. Burial will follow in the Dodge Grove Cemetery with Military Honors by the V.F.W. Post 4325. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning at the funeral home. Robert was born January 22, 1923, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Edward G. and Nada (White) Bauer. He married Alberta Marie Shaw on September 26, 1947. She passed away August 18, 2000. He was also preceded in death by his son, David Bauer. He is survived by his sister, Barbara G. Bauer of St. Pierce, Florida; several nieces and nephews; and his special friend, Pauline Lane of Mattoon. Mr. Bauer was formerly employed as an engineer with the Blaw-Knox Construction Equipment Company for twenty-eight years. He was a U. S. Army veteran. Robert was a member of the First United Methodist Church, lifetime member of the American Legion Post 88, V.F.W. Post 4325, 40 & 8, and the Eagles Club.
