Israel Kashow was the son of Daniel A. & Elizabeth (Higgins) Kashow, born on 28 Dec 1817 (per a family bible transcription from the 1870's). He was baptized in the Coffee Creek Baptist Church in Jennings County, IN, in December 1832. He married Mary Stivers in Jefferson Co., IN on 22 May 1838. In 1849, he was part of the overland expedition from New York City to California, led by Col. Webb and John W. Audubon. Along the way, he became deathly ill with cholera and was nearly buried alive, but thankfully it was realized he was still alive before they buried him. He returned to New York and recovered, traveling again to California after sufficiently regaining his health. He arrived in San Francisco and made his residence there in June 1850. By one account, he had become a grocer upon reaching and settling in San Francisco. He was supposed to send Mary the means to join him in San Francisco, but instead married Jane Williams there on 6 Feb 1851. Mary then came to San Francisco and filed for divorce, and Israel was charged with bigamy in 1853. Israel had a schooner "Lady Jane" made in New York in 1853. Mary was granted her decree of divorce on September 24, 1854. Jane died in Honolulu, Hawaii in December 1854. By 1855, he had established residence on what's currently known as Belvedere. He had established a cod fishery on Raccoon Strait, and canned from 300-700 tons of codfish every year. He married Elizabeth about 1855, and they had at least six more children. Elizabeth died 6 Nov 1866, and Israel married Sophie about 1870. The year 1892 in particular, was a tough one for this family, as Israel and Sophie lost their daughter, Elizabeth "Bessie" Mighell in July; daughter Delilah Wood in September; her husband, Charles, in October, and son Acey was aboard the whaling bark, Helen Mar, when it sunk in the Arctic on October 6th.

KASHOW - In this city, July 1, 1902, at his late residence, 2504 California street, entered into rest, Israel Kashow, husband of Sophia Kashow, father of Thorn Kashow, and grandfather of Sophie C. Wood, Lucy M. Mighell, James E. Mighell and Elma M. Scott, aged 86 years and 6 months, for many years a resident of Marin County.
--> Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend the funeral today (Thursday) at 10 o'clock, from his late residence, 2504 California street. Interment Cypress Lawn Cemetery.

A big man, well over six feet in height, and weighing more than 250 pounds, Kashow had established residence on the island in 1855, and the island was commonly referred to as "Kashow's Island." By 1860 Kashow, his wife, his four children, and a servant girl were well established on the island. Their home was on the current site of the San Francisco Yacht Club.

ISRAEL KASHOW
Israel Kashow, another Marin county pioneer, has joined the silent majority. He passed away last Tuesday at his late residence in San Francisco. All the old settlers knew Kashow. He spent nearly a quarter of a century in fighting in the courts for the possession of what was formerly known as Kashow Island, now Belvedere. He settled there in 1850 and laid claim to not only the entire penensular, but many acres adjoining it as well. About fifteen years ago he was dispossessed of the island, although he still owned at the time of his death considerable tide land in and around Tiburon. He was a terror to the fishermen, always refusing to allow them to spread their nets from his land, which, it is said, brought him into many serious difficulties.
Kashow was a native of Ohio and at one time he was a compositor on the New York Sun, a fact he often alluded to with much gratification. He buried two wives on Belvedere and the third survives him.

-------***------***
From the records/newspapers available, it appears Israel married 4 times.
1) Mary Stivers in Jefferson Co., IN on 22 May 1838; granted a divorce in SF in Sep 1854.
2) Jane Williams on 6 Feb 1851 in San Francisco, CA; a native of North Wales, she died in Honolulu, HI on 12 Dec 1854.
3) Elizabeth, also born in Wales, died Nov 1866. Buried Belvedere.
4) Sophie Shaw Ormsby, born in England, married about 1870

This is by no means intended to be a complete list of his children, but these are the children I've found reference/record for:
1)Israel Kashow (1852-1894)
2)Jane Anne (aka Jennie Alena) (1854-1905) m. Henry E. Ruffley; Edward L. Combs
3)Delilah(1857-1892) m. Charles C. Wood
4)Elvey (1859-1884)
5)Elma (1860-1891) married Alexander F. Scott
6)Elizabeth "Bessie" (1864-1892) m. James P. Mighell
7)Acey (1866-1892)
8)Thorn (1866-1955) m. Catherine LeMar; after her death, her sister

(per the 1900 census, Israel's final wife, Sophie, had no children of her own). It appears all his children except Thorn predeceased him.
note: There is a young male in the household in 1840 Jennings Co., IN, however, given the boys age, he was 5-10 years old, and since Israel and Mary Stivers weren't married until 1838, I'm not sure who the child was. The way the divorce was written, it does not seem to indicate there was a child of Mary and Israel. This may just mean the boy died before the divorce, or it may not be their child at all. I cannot reconcile this boy.
