Born January 9, 1924, in Oolitic, Indiana, he was the son of Edward and Ethel (Dyar) Jean.
He was a graduate of Bloomington High School, where he was an all-state defensive end on the football team. He was a member of the American Legion Post 18.
Rex was a veteran of the United States Army infantry, serving in the European Theatre receiving two Purple Hearts for wounds received in battle.
He was a retired letter carrier for the U.S. post office and had worked as a planer in the limestone industry before that. He loved working in his garden and loved his apple trees and also enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Joanna (Jamison) Jean of Bloomington; one son, Thomas Jean and his wife, Joan, of Bloomington; one daughter, Sharon Chapman and her husband, Paul, of Suncrest, Fla.; and one grandson, Jeremy "Jay" Jean and his wife, Jenni, of Oolitic, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Doris; and one brother, Marvin Jean.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Allen Funeral Home, with Pastor Glenn Hughes officiating. Burial will follow at Clear Creek Cemetery.
