Obituary published in The Shreveport Times, November 25, 2010:

SHREVEPORT, LA - Richard Hamilton Fletcher was born in Shreveport, LA on April 21, 1949 to RC Fletcher, Jr. and Marcella Huckaby Andrus. On November 6, 1996, he had what he considered another birthday due to the generosity and caring of an unknown family who donated the heart of their loved one so he could have new life. He passed away Tuesday, November 23, 2010, in Shreveport.

Richard graduated from C.E. Byrd High School and received his Masters Degrees from Northwestern State University and the University of Houston in Clear Lake. He was a member of Phi Eta Sigma (National Freshman Honor Society), Phi Kappa Phi (National Honor Fraternity) and Phi Mu Alpha (National Music Fraternity). Richard taught band in several high schools and then became an officer in the U.S. Air Force. He had a great love of music having played in bands from junior high through college. Richard once played with the Shreveport Symphony and after medical retirement played with several local groups along with the Shreveport Metropolitan Band. He sang in the choir at First United Methodist Church. With all his physical problems, he was always happy and kept a positive attitude. His family will miss his sly sense of humor.

Richard was preceded in death by his father, paternal grandparents, Richard Crockett Fletcher and Minnie Ola Deen Fletcher, maternal grandparents, Hugo Hamilton Huckaby and Eva Dobbs Huckaby, his sister, Linda Kay Fletcher Haro, and uncles, Hugh H. Huckaby and James Travis Huckaby.

He is survived by his mother, Marcella Huckaby Andrus and stepfather, W.S. "Buddy" Andrus; nieces, Angela Haro Olson and husband, Bobby, Sharon Haro Settles and husband, Steve; great niece, Amy Elizabeth Sims; aunts, Wanda Fletcher Copeland and Olga Fletcher Boyette; cousins, Jack Copeland, Carold Copeland, Brian Boyette and Sharon and Debbie Boyette. On the maternal side, he is survived by aunts, Maedelle Weaver, Goldene Barnheart, Beatrice Scarbrough; uncle, Rev. Marion V. Huckaby; 13 cousins; and his very close friend for 45 years, Craig Pratt and wife, Suzi.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be 4:00 p.m., Friday, November 26, 2010, in the chapel of First United Methodist Church of Shreveport. Officiating will be Dr. Carl Rhoads, Minister of Senior Adults at First United Methodist Church of Shreveport.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Richard's name to the American Heart Association or the Music Department of First United Methodist Church of Shreveport.
