Pvt. Willis P. Prevatte, a farm laborer, enlisted into Co. E, 51st. Regiment North Carolina Troops in New Hanover County, NC, May 25, 1863. He was 19 years old. He was present or accounted for until he died in a hospital in or near Chareston, SC, August 27-79th. [Burial records of the cemetery show he as buried in grave #276 in the Confederate Cemetery on August 27, 1863] Cause of death not reported. (Military Service Records from the National Archives in Washigton, DC) His sister, Crissie Jane Prevatte and others are buried in the Prevate Cemetery (Hwy 41)in Lumberton, NC. His brothers Michael, Jordan, Peter P., Andrew J., and William, also served in his regiment during the Civil War. Crissie Jane Prevatte was the first wife of Malcom Wilkerson also of Company E, 51st North Carolina Troops, Malcom later married Martha Ann Turner, and they are buried at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Dillon, SC.
