Emil died at the age of 38 on 1 Jan 1883. In addition to farming and butchering, he also worked as a teamster. While on his way home from Yorktown with a load of lumber, he was unable to cross the flooded Fifteen Mile Creek near Dobskyville, so he had to wait for the water to recede. Unfortunately the weather was extremely cold that night and he was found the next morning, sitting against a tree near the river, nearly frozen to death. He succumbed to the weather exposure a few hours after he was found. His wife gave birth to their 11th child, Emilie, that same day.
