German Politician, Lawyer, and War Criminal. He took part in the failed Beer Hall Putsch of 1923 and later became Adolf Hitler's personal legal adviser as well as the lawyer of the NSDAP, becoming the main power behind the Nazi legal system. He served as Governor General of Nazi-occupied Poland from October 1939 until January 1945 and carried out a brutal regime of oppression, murder, and genocide. Under his guidance, mass murder became a deliberate policy. After the war, Frank was captured by American troops on May 4, 1945. He was indicted for war crimes and tried before the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. Frank voluntarily surrendered 43 volumes of his personal diaries to the Allies, which were then used against him as evidence of his guilt. He was found guilty of "war crimes" and "crimes against humanity" on October 1, 1946, and was sentenced to death by hanging. During the trial, he converted to Roman Catholicism. Before his execution, his last words were, "I am thankful for the kind treatment during my captivity, and I ask God to accept me with mercy." His remains were cremated at Ostfriedhof (Munich), and the ashes were scattered in the river Isar, along with other Nazi war criminals.
