NORTHPORT - The Rev. Phillip A. Fretheim was born May 2, 1916, to the Rev. E. Andrew and Alma Poletta (Berg) Fretheim in New Effington, S.D. He passed on March 21, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He attended many different public schools as he grew up - Hayti, SD, Rochester, MN, Belview, MN - and graduated from high school in Valders, WI. He graduated from Manitowoc Business College, and went on to graduate from Luther College in Decorah, IA. He worked for short periods of time as a secretary for a retired attorney in the Upper Peninsula, and at the Manitowoc Ship Yard. He then worked as a stenographer and accountant in the office of the Chief of Chaplains of the Army in Washington, D.C. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Washington D.C. working in the communication center there. In 1944, he was transferred to the V-12 Chaplaincy Corp. and sent to Mt. Airy Seminary in Philadelphia, where he graduated with a master's degree. He was discharged from the service in 1946. He then took a year of study at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN. He was ordained into the ministry of the ELCA at Ephraim, WI. He then served churches in Northport, Suttons Bay, Elk Rapids and East Jordan. He and his family moved to Sturgeon Bay, WI in 1956 where he served the Tanum-Forest Lutheran Church for 26 years. Upon retirement in 1982, he returned to Northport. In Northport he did volunteer work at Leelanau Memorial Care Center, and substituted in pulpits of various area churches. He thoroughly enjoyed horseshoes, bowling, golfing, and especially fishing. He was a champion baseball pitcher in high school. Survived by his wife, a daughter and son and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Erling H. Fretheim; his sister, Ada H. L. Fretheim of Minneapolis; and sister-in-law, Randa Fredrickson of Northport. Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay assisted the family.
