Son of John George Aderhold and Margareth Hasselberger Aderhold. He worked as a miller and farmer and was the father of six children. According to the insignia on his grave marker, he was also a Mason.

In 1863, A.J. Aderhold enlisted as a Private in Company D of the 25th Battalion/Lee's Battalion (Provost Guard), Georgia Infantry, CSA. He separated as a First Sergeant.
