Publisher. Leonard Smithers was born to John and Martha Smithers in North Sheffield, England. He married Alice Oldham in 1882 and had one son, Jack. Smithers attended Wesley College for Law, graduating in 1884. He ultimately abandoned the law in favor of book publishing, and developed a successful business in London in the 1890s. He published works by Oscar Wilde, Aubrey Beardsley, and Ernest Dowson, among others. His business went bankrupt in 1900, after which Smithers lost his home and became estranged from his wife and son. When he died penniless in 1907, he was buried in an unmarked grave in the Fulham Palace Road Cemetery.
