Etta Van Steenwyk, age 77, of Orange City passed away Monday, July 9, 2001, at her residence.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, July 12, at 2:00 p.m., at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Steven Vander Molen officiated. Interment was held prior to the service at West Lawns Cemetery in Orange City under the direction of the Oolman Funeral Home of Orange City.

Etta was born December 22, 1923, in rural Orange City, the daughter of Herbert and Jessie (Kroeze) Huisman. She was raised mostly in rural Hospers, where she graduated from the Newkirk High School. She also graduated from the teacher's program at Westmar College in Le Mars. She then taught school and was a substitute teacher for two years.

On April 23, 1944, she married Donald Willard Van Steenwyk at Orange City. They made their home on the Van Steenwyk family farm in Holland Township until 1958, when they moved into Orange City. From 1962 to 1992, Etta was the bookkeeper for Willard as he operated a portable feed mill. He passed away May 28, 1994, in Orange City.

Mrs. Van Steenwyk was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she participated in the womens activities and a Bible study. She also volunteered at the Hands Around the World store in Orange City.

Etta devoted herself to her family, her friends, her community, and her faith. She was a talented seamstress and enjoyed music, traveling, reading, and working the daily crossword puzzle and word jumble in the newspaper.

She leaves behind to cherish her memories six children and their spouses: Karen and Jim Bolluyt, of Ames; Judy and Kent Eknes, of Rock Valley; Don and JoLynn Van Steenwyk, of Milford; Doug and Kris Van Steenwyk, of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; Tammy and Brian Vermeer, of Reading, Pennsylvania; and David and Laura Van Steenwyk, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; a son-inlaw, Robert Vander Schaaf, of Volga, South Dakota; eighteen grandchildren, Katherine Meints, and Rebecca and Benjamin Bolluyt; Kirk and Trisha Eknes; Aaron, Adam, and Amber Vander Schaaf; Shahna Janssen and Tara Van Steenwyk; Haley and Dax Van Steenwyk; Brittony, Afton, Trey, and Keaton Vermeer; and Caleb and Luke Van Steenwyk; a sister and her husband, Hildred and Maurice Vande Berg, of Orange City; four brothers and their wives, Gerrit and Ida Huisman, of Sacred Heart, Minnesota; Kenneth and LaDonna Huisman, of Hospers; Stanley and Irene Huisman, of Phoenix, Arizona; and Marvin and Helen Huisman, of San Jose, California; a sister-in-law, Trudy Huisman, of Norwalk, California; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonnie Vander Schaaf; and a brother, William Huisman.
