Vincent Thomas Van Sickel, 90, Lawrence, died Sunday, May 8, 2011, at Bridge Haven Memory Care Residence, Lawrence.

A Mass of Christian Burial was to be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Lawrence. A parish rosary was to be recited at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 10.

Graveside committal service with military honors was to be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at St. Gregory's Cemetery, Marysville.

He was a member of Mater Dei Parish, Topeka, (formerly Holy Name) for 37 years.

Vincent Van Sickel was born on March 21, 1921, at Abilene, the son of Thomas and Margaret McCormick Van Sickel.

He graduated from Abilene High School, received an associate of arts from St. Joseph's College and Military Academy in 1941 and a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Kansas State University in 1947.

He was president of the Kansas Asphalt Pavers Association.

A lifelong Army officer, he served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

He received the Bronze Star for actions taken in WWII. During WWII, he served in the First U.S. Army and saw action in the Battle of the Ruhr.

In the Korean War he was a commanding officer with the 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Division, which crossed the 38th parallel six times and was the first to reach the Yalu River and the Manchurian border.

He married Mary Freda Morrow on May 22, 1943. She preceded him in death on April 27, 2007.

He traveled the world with his wife and four children before settling in Topeka in 1970. He was called "Poppy" by his grandchildren and was known for taking them for rides to get ice cream, building dollhouses and swing sets, telling stories and rocking them to sleep.

Survivors include his children, James Van Sickel, Topeka, Chris Girard, Perry, Steve Van Sickel, St. Louis, and John Van Sickel, Lawrence; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
