Harriet Alexander was the fourth daughter and fifth child of John Baptist and Mary Alexander Beasley. She was baptized by the Rev. E. M. Forbes. She married William Alexander Littlejohn in Plymouth, Washington, North Carolina on the 20th day of November, 1856. The wedding was conducted by the Rev. Alfred Watson. She was eighteen years younger than her husband.

She and her husband William had four children

William died in 1866. She and her children along with her widowed mother and widowed sister emigrated from North Carolina to Canada in 1868. They settled in Toronto, where she lived until her mother's death in 1892.

On October 19, 1893 she married Dennis D. Simmons in York, Ontario and returned with him to Williamston NC. She is buried next to her father
