U.S. Continental Congressman. After graduating from College of William and Mary in 1855, he served in the Continual Army as a Captain and commander of Fort Loudoun, Virginia, during the French and Indian War in 1756. After his military service, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and active in pre-U.S. Revolutionary legal affairs. He was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses (1762-75), a member of the Virginia Conventions (1774-76), and a member of the committee of public safety (1775-76). In 1779, he was elected a member of the Continental Congress and was served as a judge of the General Court of Virginia (1779-89). In addition, he was president of the Fredericksburg Academy (1786-90), and judge of the first Virginia Court of Appeals from 1789, until his death.
