According to his wife's obituary (Siani Dever Porter Martin, F-A-G #70163208), Captain John E. Martin served under Colonel Jack Hays in the War of 1846 and in 1847 in the war between the United States and Mexico. He was a veteran of the Civil War having commanded a company in the regiment of Colonel Wash Jones.
