Born in the town of Angermunde, Prussia.

Parents: Martin Friedrich Kolbe II & Hanna Sophie Neumann

Married in the town of NeuKunkendorf, Prussia on 23rd October 1853.

On 30 Sept.1861 left Hamburg on the sailing ship "Prinz Albert" and arrived in New York with his wife & 3 children on November 14, 1861. In 1863, bought 40 acres in St. Clair County, Michigan. He became a farmer in Michigan, and had a total of 8 children.

Somewhere about 1870, the spelling of the name went from "Kolbe" to "Colby".

In 1887 the family moved to Pasadena, California but returned to Michigan in 1889.
