The family moved to California, settling in Woodlake, California at the age of sixteen. During a tent revival, Dewey met and married Lorene Payne. They had four children, Duane, Bob, Ted and Sharon. While raising the family, he worked in Mines of Grass Valley, owned and operated Ennis Dairy of Madera, and Boneta Gas and Grocery Market.
