Ben, along with his wife, owned and operated the Shantytown Tavern for 29 years.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Tuesday, August 26, 2003 at St. Ladislaus Catholic Church, Bevent. The Rev. Herbert Zoromski will officiate. Interment with full military honors will be held in the Parish Cemetery. There will be a Parish Wake Service Monday evening at the church.
Ben was born June 30, 1930 the son of Victor and Martha (Goskowicz) Bembenek.
He was raised on the family farm in the Town of Sharon. As a young man, he worked for local farmers, for the Town of Sharon on the road crew and as a snowplow operator.
He joined the US Army in 1952 and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged at Fort Sheridan, IL in 1954.
Ben married Jeanette Hoppa at St. Ladislaus Church on Sept. 3, 1955. They lived in Milwaukee for 18 years, where he worked for the Maynard Steel Company as a welder. They moved to their current address in November, 1965 after purchasing the Shantytown Tavern from Ann Dulak. He semi-retired in July 1994.
Ben immensely enjoyed his part-time employment working during planting/harvest season at Plover River Farms and driving for Twin Lakes Trucking, Inc. Ben really enjoyed being self-employed and polka music. He loved to play his concertinas and entertain patrons whenever he had the opportunity. He also enjoyed many sports, especially major league baseball, the Cubs or the Brewers, both brought grins. He also enjoyed his golf outings, with possibly his best Christmas present ever, a set of "Ping" clubs.
He was very thankful in his closing days, for all the personal visits given to him by family members and friends, including all the special treats from neighbors' ovens and gardens, as well as the meals of fresh fish caught in area lakes. It brought him comfort.
Ben was a past member of the Rosholt School Board and the Royal Order of the Moose in Stevens Point. He was a current member of the Polish Legion of American Veterans, Post #185 in Polonia, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #8068 in Elderon and also the American Legion, Post #509 in Rosholt.
His wife, Jeanette, and their four sons and daughters in law survive him; Gary and Deanna, Dwayne and Sue, Thomas and Christine, all of Rosholt, and Bob and Sherry of Stevens Point; four grandsons, Joshua, Ryan, Dalton and Cole; two granddaughters, Sara and Amanda; two step grandchildren, Leonard Kondrot and Michelle Kondrot; two step great granddaughters, Megan and Marrakesh; his mother, Martha, of Rosholt; two brothers, William and Rose, Eugene and Sally, all of Rosholt; two sisters, Jeanette and Frank Wierzba, Rosholt and Mary Ann and Albert Eiden, Hatley;a sister in law, Elizabeth Bembenek, Rosholt and many fantastic nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial in Ben's name will be established to the American Cancer Society and Ministry Home Care - Hospice Services. Schmidt-Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
Ben's wife, Jeanette, and the entire family would like to thank the area churches and their parishioners, especially the Rev. Rex Zimmerman, Rev. May God bless all of you for your thoughtfulness during our time of need.
