Thomas enlisted as a private for Civil War service in Company H, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, March 12, 1864, at Cleveland, Ohio(Cuyahoga County) for a term of 3 years. Occupation: Gardener. He was transferred to Company D, 183rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, June 12, 1865, at Raleigh, North Carolina to complete his term of service. He was mustered out with Company D, July 17, 1865.

His name is on Panel #15 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, OH. See www.soldiersandsailors.com.

Thomas applied for an invalid pension, June 30, 1876, which was approved and issued as Certificate #183423. His wife, Christiana(1850-1931), born in England, applied for a widow's pension, May 10, 1918, after Thomas's death from pneumonia. It was approved and issued as Certificate #853190. She drew this pension until her death in 1931. She is buried with Thomas.
Thomas's brother, Robert Allen, also served in Company H.
