He was educated in Warren County, Ohio and began life as a farmer. Abram married Rachel Anderson in Warren County, Ohio on June 30, 1839. Rachel was born in Clinton County, Ohio on December 6, 1823. She was the daughter of Hiram and Mary Mulford Anderson.
When the Civil War began, Abram headed west with C. H. Phillips to Kansas. He joined Gen. Lane's men in Iowa and continued with them through Nebraska leaving them in Kansas. He served as a military chaplain for a time, and was then appointed as the Indian agent of the Kickapoos by the President of the U.S.
Abram was with Grant at Vicksburg and carried dispatch through Rebel Troops the night before the Battle of Corinth, Miss.
He was a Methodist minister at Doniphan Co, Kansas, performing many marriages. He lived Wolf River area, and resided East Norway after coming to Troy County in 1856. He later served as a Major in the First Battalion at Troy, Kansas.
