But then on Thursday, September 10th, Dad John became sick and had to go to the hospital, and those six children became the sentries at his side, supporting him as his big heart gave out at Memorial Hospital on September 12, 2009.
John adored his children and his children looked on their Dad with the most caring and affectionate esteem.
Born in Niagara Falls, John moved as a baby to a chicken farm on Oak Street in Youngstown which had been bought by his parents, Joseph and Irene (Tedesco) Paradise. Always known as "Sonny" to his parents and family, his first school was in Youngstown but the family soon returned to the Falls where they lived on Whitney Avenue. John joined the U.S. Army Air Corps after graduation, and served his country during World War II as an airplane radio mechanic in England, achieving a rank of Technical Sergeant.
Once back home, John worked as a draftsman at Dobie Foundry, the Autolite Company and E.I. DuPont from where he retired when that company's engineering department moved to Delaware. John then became the Manager of the first Off Track Betting Parlor in Western New York located on Main Street.
As a member of Sacred Heart Church, he had been a long time member of their Holy Name Society and served as an usher for over fifty years. John enjoyed Republican politics and had been the President of the North End Republican Club as well as a GOP committeeman. Because of a unique hobby, he was a great help to his friends and family repairing all of their clocks and watches. He liked to spend time poking around flea markets and house sales. He loved music and dancing, and took ballroom dancing with each of his four daughters. In retirement, he loved to garden, and often started his day at the public library reading various daily newspapers. He was a regular at the John Duke Center where he took part in exercise, bocce, and woodcarving.
John is survived by his wife, Elsie and is remembered in a loving relationship for sixty years. All of his children survive as well as three sons-in-law- Patrick Tracy, James Kelly, and Mark Mesaros, who held their father-in-law in the most fond regard. His eleven grandchildren include Patrick and Lorraine Tracy, Rebecca and Diana Kelly, John and Juliann Gavin, John, Joel and James Paradise, and Stephen and Michael Mesaros. He has three dear siblings who also survive: Stella (late Jim) Leffler of Niagara Falls, NY, Joseph (Eileen) Paradise of NJ, and Gloria Wittkop of Niagara Falls, NY. John was predeceased by sisters Julia (late Ernest) Covey and Marie Borgese. He is also survived by brother-in-law Frank (Jennie) Borgese, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Everyone who knew John will remember his generosity, his kind spirit, and his quick wit; when he laughed, which was often, his face lit up and everyone joined in. John was a rock and a constant to everyone in his large family. He leaves a void; our lives will never be the same, and we will miss him.
