MOUNT PLEASANT MILLS - Howard A. Martin, 82, Mount Pleasant Mills RD1, died at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Gold Star Nursing Home, Danville RD5, where he had been a guest since August, 1974.
Mr. Martin entered the nursing home following his discharge from the Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.
He joined the Army in 1918, serving in France, and Germany.
Mr. Martin farmed early in life. Later he worked on road construction, retiring in 1965.
In 1918, he was married to the former Minnie Phillips, Mount Pleasant Mills RD1, who survives.
Mr. Martin was born Aug. 29, 1893, in the Mount Pleasant Mills RD1 area, the son of the late George and Emma Steffen Martin.
He was a member of Grubb's Lutheran Church and Sunday school, Port Trevorton RD1; Middleburg V.F.W. 5604; Middleburg American Legion; Fremont Fire Company, Mount Pleasant Mills; and a life member of the Freeburg Fire Company.
In addition to his widow, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Donald Portzline, of Mount Pleasant Mills RD2, and Miss Erma Martin, at home; six sons, Howard A. Jr. of Roxbury, N.Y., Merlin R . of Middleburg RD1 Pa., Palmer E. of Hummels Wharf, Lt. Col. Ret., Charles E. of Honolulu. Hawaii, and James W. and Alfred L., both of Mount Pleasant Mills RD1; and 22 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
One son, Lt. George F. Martin, was killed in action during World War II.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m., Sunday in Grubb's Lutheran Church, Port Trevorton RD1. The Rev. Celo V. Leitzel will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call at the Carman Funeral Home. Mount Pleasant Mills, Saturday night, or at the church Sunday from noon to the hour of the service.
A military service will be conducted at the graveside by the Middleburg American Legion and the Middleburg V.F.W.
Contributions to his memory may be made to the building fund of Grubb's Lutheran Church, in care of the Rev. Mr. Leitzel.
