August Burkhart of Jefferson County NE signed his declaration of intention to become a US citizen on Feb 9, 1918. He signed his name in German. He says he came on the ship Ilga but it was the ship Gothia according to immigration records. Immigration records says that the ship arrived October 31, 1888. The declaration states November 5th. The later date was probably when the family arrived in NE.

The August Burkhart family immigrated to New York from Stettin, Germany on the ship Gothia. The date of arrival was October 31, 1888. Also on this ship was Augusta Elske and Michael Dube, who was the uncle/step-father of Johanna Dube Borchert.

August Burkhart, seventy-six years old, died suddenly September 24 [1928] while on a visit to his daughter, Mrs. Herman Laufman at Akron, Colorado. Death was due to heart failure. Since Mrs. Burkhart died years ago, Mr. Burkhart has made his home with his children.

Mr. Burkhart was born September 2, 1851 at Falterbach, Pomerania, Germany. In 1875 he was married to Miss Johanna Dove (sic). The following sons and daughters survive: Mrs. August Butt, Central City Nebr; Mrs. Herman Laufmann, Akron Colo; Mrs. Ed Laufmann, Orange, Califor; Mrs. Fred Heideman of Idaho; Mrs. Amelia Heidemann, Tobias Nebr; Henry Burkhart, Akron Colo; Wm. Burkhart, S. Dak; Herman Burkhart, Fairbury [NE]; Frank Burkhart, Daykin [NE].

Mr. Burkhart is also survived by fifty-two grandchildren and twenty one great grandchildren. Only a few weeks ago he went to spend the winter with his daughter in Colorado. He had lived in Nebraska many years locating on a farm near Western [NE] nearly 40 years ago.

Funeral services were held a week ago last Thursday from the home of his son Frank near Daykin, and from the Immanuel Lutheran Church east of Daykin, in charge of Rev. A.C. Gilker. Pall bearers were H. Mohling; Sievert Hauser; H. Meyer; Charles Schwisow; Louis Schwisow and Fred Hummel.
