Jesse Clark Now "Presumed Dead"

A 23-year-old Jerome resident and graduate of the Wendell high school, Jesse Clark, is now presumed dead, the war department has notified his mother, Mrs. Celia Clark, who now resides in Sacramento, Calif. Clark, who held the rank of sergeant, was a ball-turret gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress. He was shot down on a bombing mission over Gustrow, Germany, April 7, 1945. Chutes were seen to open before the plane disappeared, but non of the crew is known to have survived, the war department reported. The youth was born on Aug. 10, 1922 at Jereome and attended school there until his junior year when he moved to Wendell. He enlisted in the air corps in October, 1943. He was the recipient of the air medal and oak leaf cluster. In addition to his mother his is survived by one brother, Leland, Sacramento; seven sisters, Beverly Clark and Mrs. Jack Boyle, both of Sacramento; Mrs. Clarence Kersey, San Pablo, Calif.; Mrs. Fay Smith, Richmond, Calif.; Varion Clark, Pocatello; Mrs. Jay Byram and Mrs. Maxine Hartwig, Jerome. Final Honor Will Be Given Jerome Casualty of War

JEROME, Sept. 19 - Funeral services for Sgt. Jesse W. Clark, 22, when he was reported missing in action over Europe April 7, 1945, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the LDS first ward chapel, with Bishop A. Leo Olsen officiating. The American Legion will conduct military graveside rites at the Jerome cemetery. The late Sergeant Clark was born here on Aug. 20, 1922, and was graduated from the Jerome high school. He served as a turret gunner on a bomber in Europe. His body, previously buried in a European cemetery, will be received by the Willey funeral home Wednesday. His survivors are his mother, Mrs. Celia Clark, Sacramento, Calif.; his father, Varion T. Clark, Hawthorne, Nev.; and six sisters, Beverly Clark, Mrs. Jack Boyle, Mrs. Clarence Kersey, Mrs. Fay Smith and Mrs. Ted Hartwig, all of Sacramento, and Mrs. J. Byrum, Jerome.
