My great-grandmother, who lived to be very old. I remember my mother picking me up so I could see her in her coffin. I was four years old and insisted that the person in the box was most certainly NOT my great grandmother! My mother eventually gave up trying to explain to me what had happened. It is eerie, but that is my very earliest memory.
Huldah had many children and lots of tragedies as women experienced in her era. One of her sons died aboard the U.S.S. Valencia when it capsized off the coast of British Columbia. He was only 16 years old. One of her twin sons died when he was electrocuted at work. He is buried just a few rows away from her and Frank Willard Locke, her first husband.
Then next to them lies their grandson, 18-year-old "Babe" Anderson, who was killed at age 18 by a drunk driver.
A daughter, "Pet," died when she was little. She was born with many deformities. But despite all of this, Huldah kept on with life, moving to the Pacific Northwest around the turn of the century, leaving all of her siblings and her mother behind. She and Frank lived on the shores of Spanaway Lake and she was famous for her quilt making, her sauerkraut and her mincemeat.
I hope to meet you in Heaven, great-grandmother!
