Mary was the fifth of eight children {six sons & two daughters} born to Johann Heinrich & Marcia Catherina (Vienhage) Athmann. She came to America in 1882 with her mother & six siblings; settling in Stearns County, MN.
On 9 October 1882, Mary married John Heinen at Saint Michael Catholic Church in Saint Michael, MN; he was age 32, she was 27.
