Matthew J. Winter, a leading merchant of Melrose, was born in Lake Henry township in Stearns County, on February 24, 1882. Matt is the son of Peter and Anna (Miller) Winter, and his paternal grandparents are John and Katherine (Thielen) Winter from Spring Hill, Minn.
Matthew attended the district schools and the Sauk Centre Business College. Then he worked in a hardware store at Sauk Centre for two years. Subsequently he was employed a similar period by the Gund Brewery Company at Sauk Centre.
Matthew Winter came to Melrose and worked two years for C. J. Hoeschen and was in the general mercantile business four years at Melrose.
In 1911 he opened his own furniture store in Melrose. Mr. Winter carries a large line of goods and has one of the best stores of its kind in the county. In addition to the furniture store he also conducts an undertaking establishment.
Mr. Winter was married April 14, 1906 to Helen Ostendorf, daughter of August & Augusta Ostendorf of Melrose township. They had 5 children, Ernest, Bernard, Viola, Virgina and Warren Winter.

The daughhter, Viola Winter, is Mrs. Vi (Henry) Berns. She was the organist at St. Mary's Church in Melrose for many years. In 2011 she celebrated her 100th birthday.
