Robert (Bob) Eugene West, 65, of Portales, NM, died at peace with the Lord at the VA hospital in Amarillo, TX, on May 9, 2011.
Robert was preceded in death by his mother, Bonnie Jean West.
He is survived by his daughter, Amanda Lee West of Lubbock, TX; his father, Leslie West and Frankie of Albuquerque, NM; Stella, Vincent, Andrew, and Ernestine Starr of Portales; brother, Steve West and Cindy of Albuquerque; sisters, Carolyne Karnofel and John of Salinas, CA, Barbara Medlin and Marshall of Dallas, TX, and Cynthia Lewis and Daniel of Santa Cruz, CA. He has three nephews, Heath Rice, Clint and Nathan West; four nieces, Stephanie Lewis, Kate Fuller, Jessica Medlin, and Claire Ramsey; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, and many cousins, aunts, and uncles.
Robert grew up in Los Lunas, NM. He graduated from high school in 1964 after which he joined the Navy to serve in the Vietnam War. Following the service, he earned a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and later an MBA, both from UNM. For over 20 years he worked as an Engineer for various companies in New Mexico and Texas. Bob developed several inventions and numerous business ideas.
Those of us blessed to have known Robert will never forget his quick wit, ability to tell a joke, and his kind generosity. Robert loved to sing, play his guitar and dance. He had an amazing intellect, was a deep philosophical thinker, and was a prolific writer. He loved gardening, canning and preserving food, camping, traveling, horseback riding, and cooking.
Robert was an active member of VFW, American Legion, Disabled Vets, AmVets, and Eagles.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Robert's name to one of the above organizations, to Alcoholics Anonymous or any charity of your choice.
A graveside service, with military honors, will be at 12:45 p.m. Monday, May 16 at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held at the home of Randy and Shaneie Hise in Bosque Farms, NM, on Saturday, May 14 at 5:00 pm. In Clovis, there will be a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 14 hosted by AmVets for friends. A celebration of life reception featuring the Blackwater band will be held at the Eagles in Clovis, NM, on Saturday, May 21 at 6:00 pm.
