Orange D. Pomeroy Jr. was born in 1810 in Northampton, Massachusetts. Soon after he was born, his parents moved to Easthampton, Mass before their second child was born. He moved again with his family to Cannonsville, (township no longer exists and is now called "Tompkins Twp.) in Delaware Co., New York. It is here where he met his wife Sarah "Sally" Monfore (Montfore, Monfret), the daughter of Deacon Garret Montfore and Sarah "Sally" Griswald (Griswold).

According to his obituary, he was called "Dwight" by his family and there is some contradictory records that say his middle name was actually "Durvach". He apparently preferred to be called "Dwight" and didn't want to be called "Orange" or "Durvach".

Orange D. ("Dwight") Pomeroy Jr. and wife Sally had at least five known children: Almira (Almma S.) Pomeroy, Whiting G. Pomeroy, Huldah B. Pomeroy(obviously named after Orange Jr.'s mother Huldah Boyd), Arthur Leander Pomeroy, and Maria E. Pomeroy.
