Ronnie, the son of Bill Hawks and Lena Hawks, the husband of Mildred O. Hawks and the father of Ronda I, and Ronnie L. Hawks Jr, all of Rockford IL enlisted in the US Marine Corps on September 1968 in St Louis MO. He arrived in Vietnam on March 18 1969, and was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On December 21 during a combat patrol east of Thon Hai in Que Song District an M-26 grenade rigged to a trip wire was detonated setting off a SFD (secondary firing device) wounding four Marines who were evacuated. PFC Hawkes died at the Station Hospital NSA in Da Nang as a result of multiple fragmentation wound from the hostile device on December 28.
