Wallace was the 5th child out of 6 born to Charles Lewis Smith and Willie Wesson Smith. He was married to Katherine Giltorn and they were living in Louisville where he was employed as manager of an automobile supply store.
He and a friend were handling a pistol one evening and to demonstrate that it wasn't loaded, he held it to his right temple and pulled the trigger. He died an hour later in St. Joseph Hospital. He was taken to Princeton where he grew up and buried beside his parents. He had just turned 24 and they had no children.
