Oscar Irvin Beck, 81, died Jan. 10 at Brandon Woods Retirement Community in Lawrence.

He was born April 30, 1922, in Melvern, the son of Oscar Irvin Sr. and Hazel Goldsmith Beck.

He married Pauline Dill on Feb. 1, 1942, in Lawrence. She died Jan. 17, 2002.

A resident of Lawrence, coming from Holyrood, he was a retired oil field pumper and a self-employed oil field maintenance operator. Previously he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, was a postmaster for the Crow Agency Indian Reservation in Montana, worked in the coal mines in Burlingame and owned the Cozy Cafe in Burlingame in the early 1950s.

Beck was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ and American Legion Post No. 200. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II.

Survivors include one daughter, JoAnn Seitz of Lawrence; one brother, Russell Beck of Emporia; five sisters, Anita Faulkner and Ione Monroe, both of Osage City, Velma McMillin of Hoisington, Wiona Brown of Lawrence and Irene Sattler of Newton; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lawrence Funeral Chapel. Internment will be held later at Holyrood Cemetery in Holyrood. There is no visitation, cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to Oscar I. Beck Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral chapel.
