Mr. Belk, formerly of Monroe, North Carolina, and a resident of Plantation Estates in Matthews, died on May 9th 2011. Mr. Belk, 84, was the oldest of three sons of Hazel Cornelius Belk and Kalee Haywood Belk. A native of Monroe, he was educated in the Monroe City Schools, attended Brevard College and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mr. Belk was drafted near the end of World War II and served in the United States Navy. Mr. Belk was a life-long member of Central United Methodist Church in Monroe, North Carolina. He was one of the founding officers of the Monroe Savings and Loan Association and retired from Wachovia Corporation. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 13, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Central United Methodist Church in Monroe. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 1:45 prior to the service in Central Hall at the church. Burial will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park. Mr. Belk is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marianne Niven Belk. Mr. Belk was pre-deceased by a son, John Franklin Belk and two brothers, Billy Ray Belk and Robert Lee Belk.
