Joel P. McConnell, 89, of Mooresville, died Nov. 6, 2006, at Brian Center Health & Retirement. Born Jan. 10, 1917 in Cornelius, he was the son of the late Abner Linnie and Lillie Jane Sigmon McConnell.

Mr. McConnell was a graduate of Texas Tech with an engineering degree. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. During World War II, he served as an instructor of artillery at Fort Sill, Okla. He was involved in the first wave of the Luzon Invasion in the Phillipines as an intelligence staff officer. He ended his military career at the rank of captain.

He was employed by Gulf Oil Corporation for over 30 years as a sales engineer. Mr. McConnell was a very active member of First Presbyterian Church in Mooresville, where he sang in the choir for many years. He was a member of the Audubon Society and published a book on McConnell Geneology.

In addition to his parents, he is preceeded in death by his sisters, Rachel McConnell, Mabel M. Robertson, Martha Westmoreland; and brothers, Billy McConnell and John McConnell.

Mr. McConnell is survived by his wife, Emily Sue McConnell, whom he married May 30, 1943; daughter, Susan and her husband, Ed Davis of Mooresville; son, Joel P. and wife, Suellen McConnell of Blue Ridge, S.C.; sisters, Vera M. Henderson and Anne M. Kerr, both of Mooresville; grandchildren, Cheryl Leazer, Mark Day, Joan Kelley, Joel Henry Davis, Stuart Allen McConnell, Robert Houston McConnell; great-grandchildren, Allyson Leazer, Emma Leazer, Trevor Kelley, Emily Grace Kelley.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m., at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Clay Brown officiating. Committal services with military honors will be held at Glenwood Memorial Park following the service. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. prior to the memorial service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to The National World War II Museum, 945 Magazine Street, New Orleans, LA 70130 Attn: Craig Hall; and First Presbyterian Church, 249 W. McLelland Ave., Mooresville, NC 28115. The McConnell family is being served by Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville.
