He came to Appanoose County at the age of twelve with his father, his mother having died when he was a small boy.

He enlisted with Company F of the 8th Iowa Cavalry on 24 Jun 1863 from his home in Moravia, Iowa.

He was discharged on 13 Aug 1865 at Macon, GA.

On 30 Jan 1873, he married Cordelia Amelia Frazee at Augusta IL. She was born on 12 Mar 1839.

They had eight children.

He filed a claim for an invalid pension (#234412) on 20 Apr 1879.

His widow Cordelia Hiatt also filed a claim for a pension (#1122453) on 24 Jun 1918.

He also served in Company C, 36th Iowa Infantry and was a member of the G.A.R.
