"Martha Ann Mathews-Teel"

OBIT: The Rushville Times, August 10, 1899; {NOTE: Martha A. Teel was born in Wilmington, New Castle Co., Del., Nov. 5, 1811.} In 1812 her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Mathews, crossed the Allegheny mountains on horseback and settled in Pittsburgh, Pa. In 1820 they removed to Frankford, Pa. and from there went to Ohio. On June 1, 1829 Miss Mathews was married to Henry P. Teel. Three years afterward they removed to Illinois and located in this city. The trip was made via the Ohio, Mississippi and Illinois Rivers and Mr. and Mrs. Teel and their two small children landed at the town of Erie, which was located in this county between Frederick and Beardstown. -- In 1835 Mr. Teel removed to the territory of Iowa and settled near Ft. Madison. That section of the country was then thickly populated with Indians under the leadership of Black Hawk and Keokuk. They were frequent visitors at the Teel home, as the spirit of strife with the white man, which in a few years led to their extermination, was then at a low ebb. Mrs. Teel's brother, Wm. Matthews, a tailor by trade, assisted by his sister, made the broadcloth coat worn by Chief Keokuk when he went on his famous peace mission to Washington. -- In 1832 Mrs. Teel joined the Presbyterian Church at Florence, Pa. and remained a faithful member to the end of her life. -- After returning to Rushville from Iowa Mr. Teel erected a cabin on the lots just east of Washington School building and resided there until 1845, when he purchased a quarter section of land in Sect. 16 Rushville Twp., which belonged to his wife at the time of her death. Here she lived until last winter when her house was destroyed by fire and she came to Rushville, where she has since made her home with her son, Hon. James A. Teel -- On Sunday evening Mrs. Teel was in a happy mood, talked with friends who called and retired to a good night's rest. She commented on how soundly she had slept when she arose the next morning and took her place at the breakfast table. She had taken but little food when she suddenly exclaimed, "My breath!" and fell forward--dead. -- Mrs. Teel was the mother of seven children, six of whom survive. They are James A, Teel and Mrs. Wm. Woods, of this city; Henry G. Teel and E. C. Teel, who reside a few miles north of the city; Mrs. Wm. Carty of Maysville, Arkansas, and Wm. Teel of Cherokee county, Kansas -- Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church yesterday at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Dr. Wo[?] Werth; and a large number of friends of the family followed the remains to their last resting place in our beautiful cemetery.
