Born Justin Earl Phillips Jr. in Jennings Missouri to
Justin E Phillips (1904-1968) and Florence Keller Hare (1907-1996).

Florence started using the surname McCormick for Justin while he was in elementary school, she never had his name legally changed. He was known to his close friends and family as Sonny. J Earl to me...

He joined the US Navy in Jan 1959, retired after 30 years as a PNCM in August 1988, he absolutely loved his job, to him it wasn't a job but a joy to serve. At retirement he moved to Arizona. He worked for Trucks Stops of America, Wal-Mart in loss prevention, the City of Casa Grande and UniChem. As always he enjoyed the challenges of new adventures and meeting so many new people in this small town of 12,000 people where he had gone to high school.

Married to Mary Lou Ouellette Nov 7, 1960, in San Diego CA. One of his favorite saying to her was "spend all your kisses". Father to 5 children Robert, Mary (Laurie), John, Michael and Ellen. 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson.

Very much a "people" person, friend to all. Loved to drink coffee, smoke, read and go fishing and he was always up for stopping at a yard sale or two. Some of his collections included cigarette lighters, ball caps, mostly from Navy ships, knives, I'm sure every member of his immediate family has a knife given to them by J Earl, flashlights, same holds true here for the flashlights as with the knives! He always carried a handkerchief and a comb. Work or dress shoes were always polished, always!! and he always wore a white undershirt under his button shirts.

While stationed in Hawaii he served as president of the PTA at Aliamanu Elementary School and was Cub Master for Pack 8 at that same school in Honolulu. Always involved in little league baseball and church activities at St George's Episcopal Church it was a very busy time but filled with wonderful memories.

Oh, how he enjoyed feeding and taking photographs of the humming birds that buzzed around his patio. Enjoyed the music of Patsy Cline and Ahmad Jamal, the joy of a sunrise and the beauty of a sunset. He loved homemade tacos and the chicken enchiladas made by daughter Laurie.

Want something fixed, no problem J Earl had a knack for figuring out how to get it done...I was always asking him, "how do you know how to do that?"

He also liked to ask people right after New Years Day's "How old are you going to be Next year?" More often than not the answer was wrong...!!! He loved asking.

How do you describe one's sense of humor?

Loved his family, all the cats he adopted along the way and his little dog Patches till the end. Patches died 86 days before his friend J Earl, Patches had been in the family for 14 years. Preceded in death by son Robert, 12 Dec 1988.
Left behind, those who will think of him always with smiles and a few (more than a few) tears are his wife and:

Daughter: Laurie Boyle and grandchildren Jennifer, Kathlene and Eddie
Son: John, Celia (Accardi), grandchildren John Robert and Lydia McCormick
Son: Michael, Alison (Johnston) and grandchild Andrew
Daughter: Ellen and Stacy Schiver
Granddaughter: Amanda (McCormick) Carney and great-grandson Ethan

He was 6' had brown hair, hazel eyes and was right-handed

To meet him once was to remember him forever.

Thinking about that Don Williams song:
Coffee black, cigarettes,
start this day, like all the rest,
"and the rest of the song rings true, Note from me ML"
First thing every morning that I do,
Is start missing you..
Some broken hearts never mend,
Some memories never end,
Some tears will never dry,
My love for you will never die

Charley Pride and Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'
now that brings back memories...we were so lucky, thanks J Earl, wouldn't have missed it for the world...
Don't Forget To Remember Me...
"You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go"

"Grieve Not For Me"

Remember the best times, the laughter the songs,
The good life I lived when I was strong.

Continue my heritage, I'm counting on you
Keep smiling and surely the sun will
shine through

My mind is at ease, my soul is at rest,
Remembering all now, I was truly blessed.

Continue traditions, no matter how small
Go on with your life, don't stare at the wall.

I miss you all dearly, so keep up your chin
Until the day comes, when we're together again.
